Trekking the Lycian Way in Style
Lycian Way Trekking (LWT) is a brand new holiday concept and website designed for those who want to explore the history, culture and rich wildlife in the countryside around Fethiye, Ölüdeniz and further afield, including the Lycian Way; an ancient trading route between Antalya and Fethiye that has been revived in recent years, and, according to the Sunday Times is one of the best treks in the world.

Erdinç Sidekli, joint founder of Ezmen Tourism and himself an keen walker, has brought together some of his favourite walking itineraries, which encompass a selection of the finest trails, breathtaking panoramas, wonderful history and authentic village experiences that the southwest coast of Turkey has to offer, in one comprehensive website.

Asked why he is so enthusiastic about the future of LWT Sidekli said, “I love walking with my friends and family and wanted to share some of the special places in this part of my country with my guests too. Because of my knowledge of this area I have, together with LWT’s professional guides, been able to design the itineraries to suit my different guests and have included certain aspects to ensure their satisfaction, comfort and safety. I think LWT will be a great success, being just the sort of quality alternative tourism that Fethiye needs.”

Accessible and easy to use, Lycian Way Trekking, offers a selection of guided treks and tailor made or bespoke hikes off the tourist trail. With one of LWT’s highly qualified professional guides there are now many exciting opportunities to witness nature, history and traditional Turkish culture, while in the safe hands of an official guide.

The Lycian Way snakes along the dramatic coastline some 500km, all the way from Antalya to Fethiye and with LWT walking enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to walk the whole way or taste some of the best bits while learning about them from the guide. With the weeklong trails LWT’s transport will take the load off hikers by delivering their luggage to the next hotel, pension or village house, leaving the walkers unburdened except for their daypack. In addition, holidaymakers can incorporate a variety of exhilarating walks into their annual holiday with a weekend walking experience or a selection of one-day treks, to suit both their timetable and their fitness levels.

For instance, Kayaköy is a delightful valley tucked away in the heavily forested peninsula to the south of Fethiye and which has a range of trails to suit all abilities. LWT’s walks cover the historical riches of the area, from the abandoned town of Livissi to the monastery of Af Kule, as well as some enchanting hidden trails through the pine forests. One of the many benefits of LWT’s guided treks is that they are linear as opposed to circular; comfortable air conditioned transport will always be waiting at the end of the trail. On one of the Kayaköy walks, for example, the walk finishes with a boat trip from Turunç Bay back to Fethiye.

For trekkers preferring to made a series of one off or day walks they will be able to stay in the comfortable surroundings of Sea Breeze Hotel and Apartments, Ezmen Tourism’s hotel in the mountain resort of Ovacik. Here there are swimming pools, a gym and soothing massages available, as well as a traditional hamam or Turkish bath. What better facilities could there be for weary trekkers? There is also a great restaurant with a comprehensive menu, ideal for hungry hikers.

Sidekli also welcomes the friends, family and partners of trekking enthusiasts: “Although I love trekking, I am fully aware that not everyone does,” he says. “With some couples just one wants to walk, while the other might prefer to relax. At Sea Breeze we have two beautiful pools for them, and a full pampering service. We are also developing a cookery course should they want to learn about Turkish cuisine and of course Fethiye has some excellent shopping opportunities.”

The Fethiye region has some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean but tourism isn’t always about beach holidays and with LWT’s new venture Sidekli wants to introduce visitors to this part of Turkey to some of its other beautiful places and to open up tourism for more than just the summer season.
